Character: Espio

Background Information: Espio is ready to go.

Personality:
1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.

Team Chaotix Detective Agency has some colorful people in it. Vector and Charmy are both eccentric and loud, while by comparison Espio is the serious mature one who keeps the other two in line. It is but a partial truth as one gets to know Espio, for he isn't too far removed from his other two teammates. Still, if one was to go by first impressions alone, they might call Espio a serious person who has a calm, determined demeanor. On the outside, he expresses himself as an aloof focused warrior, and without really getting to know him it would be all too easy to accept that at face value.

The truth is, though, that Espio isn't really so above it all. He can get caught up in the hijinks of his teammates fairly easily, and often times his own competitive nature can take over his more reasonable sensibilities, such as committing really hard to the mystery game in The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog without really questioning it.

Basically, Espio is a teenager who has grown up too fast, is trying very hard to be totally cool and with it, but isn't always because Teenager.


2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?

Two things: justice... and money.

Really, if you could just run a business without the cost, Espio probably would have no problem acting freely without needing the paycheck, but the Chaotix Detective Agency is constantly without much money and when they do get paid, it's immediately splurged on eating out. They don't really manage their funds well. At the end of the day, Espio can be counted on to do the right thing, but if he's been asked to take on a job he will want some compensation out of it ideally.

But really, it's about justice first, and it's something that Espio does bring up often. Even in his reboot for Sonic Heroes, he mentions frequently about defeating evil. During the IDW comics, he also expresses that he would rather put Eggman down, as it were, while he's stuck in his "Mr. Tinker" persona, not wanting to risk him becoming his villainous self... but he is convinced by Sonic to do otherwise.

Essentially, at the heart of it, Espio wants to do what is right and uphold his sense of honor for the sake of others, but a paycheck wouldn't hurt either.


3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?

To Espio, he always feels as if he needs to continue to train himself in order to remain in peak condition and be prepared for anything. If there is a misstep on his part, then Espio will focus all the harder on his training so that he isn't taken by surprise again. At the same time, he does think of himself as mentally strong and physically capable, that only a mighty foe could ever take him down so he has an understanding of his strengths.

Arguably, though, Espio's true weakness is that he's arrogant and it is something he tries to battle -- but he does love to be recognized for his abilities, will brag from time to time, and will not admit that he physically cannot keep up with Shadow and Sonic in terms of speed. He thinks very highly of himself even if he doesn't act particularly obnoxious about it, but he refuses to acknowledge his own limitations as well. As a result, outside of Team Chaotix, Espio absolutely struggles to ask for help in any respect.

In addition, he feels the gravest mistake he's made is not putting an end to Eggman when given the chance, having let Sonic persuade him to leave the doctor to live his life as Mr. Tinker. Espio even goes out of his way to angrily confront Sonic later when the infection of the zombots takes over the rest of Team Chaotix.


4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?

When motivated by competition, Espio is willing to learn nearly anything to win. This means that he's adaptive and enjoys learning new skills in order to beat others in some manner of contest, however he is not someone who cheats. Above all else, Espio absolutely is determined to play fair.

Another amusing tidbit is that after one befriends Espio, a bit more of his mischievous side can come out when he's comfortable in his relationship to a person. For example, Espio learned that his friend, Knuckles, was reading a novel. So, Espio decided to read the novel himself which hardly took any time, memorized each page and line, and specifically went out of his way to spoil the ending for Knuckles because he thought it would be funny.

On the other hand, Espio wouldn't pull the same kind of trickery on someone like Cream, who is typically a very soft and gentle personality. In his eyes, someone like Knuckles can take the prank without any issue, even if it earns the echidna's ire for a brief time.


Abilities & Inventory:

- Ninjitsu: Espio is a highly disciplined ninja capable of incredible feats. He is extremely skilled with kunai primarily, but does occasionally use shuriken. Pretty much some standard ninja affair that includes acrobatics, agility, stealth, and precision, as well as philosophy and meditation. Due to his diligence, Espio can also evidently speak in 17 languages, as well as read and memorize books in nearly no time at all.

- Leaf Swirl: Linked to his training in ninjitsu, Espio is capable of performing a gust of wind to knock back his foes.

- Camouflage: As a chameleon, Espio is able to change his skin color to look almost entirely invisible. However, it is still possible for people to either smell or hear him.

- Climbing: Somethingsomething he's a chameleon so Espio can just climb walls like he's hecking Spider-man don't worry about it

- Speed: Espio is extremely fast, but doesn't quite match up to Shadow and Sonic no matter what he says.

- Gardening: Exceptional enough that he won a contest with a blossom he cultivated for spring.

ARMADA SELECTION

Paladin would be Espio's kneejerk choice for two distinct reasons. The first reason would be that he has a strong sense of duty and justice, even if it applies mostly to his own sense of morality and balance. The second reason is that Espio is a ninja and he doesn't want to be a goddamn pirate or be mistaken for one if he can help it.

One could make a case for him to be a Corsair as well if the numbers are needed for it; after all, Espio is always so dang broke and could always use the money. He would prefer Paladin given the option, but know that I am ambivalent if you need to balance things out.
